Make your kids go outside!

Growing up in the countryside, going outside was never an option. My parents made us play outside each day, unless it was pouring (and even then, sometimes!). Snow, sun, hot or cold, we were taught and learned to dress for the weather. While going outside can sometimes be a struggle in Canada’s extreme weather it is a “fight” worth having with your child.

Harvard professor Claire McCarthy gives six benefits to kids playing outdoors. First, sunshine provides essential vitamin D, which helps regulate mood, sleep, and bone development. Second, outdoor time almost automatically means exercise! Spending time outdoors also aids our executive functioning like problem-solving, taking initiative. Additionally, it creates a place for risk-taking, whether climbing a tree or jumping over the creek. As we grow, we need to learn to take appropriate risks and the best time to learn is in childhood. Spending time at the park, or on a sports team also fosters socialization and encourages kids to interact with others. Finally, the more time we spend in nature, the deeper our appreciation for it grows.

We are called to rule over creation as kings and queens rule over a nation; protecting, nurturing and developing it. How can we properly care for creation if we do not first grow to love and understand it? Spending time at the local park or conservation area is one way that we will grow to love the beauty in God’s creation. So, lets make our kids go outside! Rain or shine!
