Our Academics

Subjects

Hope Academy's goal in teaching our subjects is to not only have high academic standards so children learn to work hard and succeed, but also to develop learning capabilities to use outside of the classroom. Skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, good habits, stewardship, diligence, and responsibility are taught in all subjects, so it may have real-life practical application. We want our students to absorb good, Godly values and habits that will translate into successful jobs, relationships, and decisions, and make a positive impact in their communities or wherever they go.

Mathematics

Mathematics

Students are taught to see the orderly design of the world, learning skills such as number fluency and numeration, measurement, geometry and spatial awareness, patterning, algebra, data management, and probability. To do this, students will master mathematical processes, operations, and language, understanding how to reason, justify their conclusions, and express their ideas clearly. Basic math skills and speed drills are emphasised as well as problem solving and application skills.

Essay

Language Arts

This program encourages students' growth in four main areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Mastering reading with a phonetic approach is the focus of the primary grades as reading is the key to success in most subject areas. The writing program includes penmanship and grammar as well as creative writing. Listening and speaking skills are developed through a variety of activities, including the opportunity for students to verbally present their work in order to hone those speaking and presentation skills even more. In exploration of these skills, students will learn to evaluate various styles of writing and will practise media literacy and discernment.

Bible

Bible

Students are taught Bible stories to become familiar with God's Word and to see His concern for His people and His world. Memory work is an important component of Bible class. The students will enjoy the lessons and grow stronger in the knowledge and appreciation of God's Word, His creatures, and His Creation.

Music

Music

Singing, which includes the teaching of Christian songs, is an important part of Hope Academy. In the junior grades students begin formal music instruction which includes theory and technique (recorder) as well as developing an appreciation and awareness of a variety of music from different eras and cultures. Through these activities students begin to expand their musical and creative abilities so that they can enjoy music for life.

Science And Technology

Science And Technology

Through the study of science students learn to appreciate the world around them. They learn to describe and explain elements of the physical world by looking at the characteristics of matter and a variety of systems and the way they interact with one another. Through scientific experiments and inquiry, the students will develop the skills to investigate and test scientific facts, exploring the relationship of technology and science with society. In addition, students will be encouraged in healthy stewardship and the responsible use of resources and technology available today.

Social Studies

Social Studies

Social Studies form the foundation for history and geography in the intermediate grades. Students learn what it means to be a responsible citizen in Canada, covering key concepts such as culture, change, power, environment, and the marketplace. They also begin to have a grasp of a variety of communities in our diverse and interdependent world. Research projects help students to develop inquiry and communication skills.

Art

Art

Art helps students to develop fine motor skills as well as to give them an opportunity for creativity, self-expression, imagination, invention, and observation through understanding art in context.  Students will produce their own works and learn how to appreciate and evaluate the works of others, often connecting their projects to other areas of the curriculum.

Physical Education

Physical Education

Students are encouraged to develop habits of lifelong healthy, active living. Through a variety of physical activities they are encouraged to achieve their personal best while also practising fair play, respect, and sensitivity towards others. Since proper bodily development and physical fitness are necessary to live productive and healthy lives, students will practise movement that will aid them in enjoying and participating in activities throughout their life.

French

French

In the primary grades students begin to develop an appreciation for French, one of Canada’s two official languages, and learn how to fluently communicate in it. The emphasis at this level is vocabulary which is taught through a variety of activities and songs. There is more formal instruction at the junior level which includes oral and written activities as well. Learning a second language always has an advantage, for it not only strengthens the students' abilities to communicate using a second language, but it also fosters respect and appreciation of other cultures and languages.
